It’s completely normal.
Teachers aren’t given training on albinism or low vision, and you shouldn’t be expected to figure everything out on your own.
That’s why The Teacher’s Compass was created. It´s a supportive membership with clear, simple guidance grounded in mindfulness, positive psychology, and lived experience.
Inside, you’ll find practical tools you can rely on in real classrooms, emotional support for both you and your student.
Teachers of children with albinism are dispersed. The teacher-to-teacher community is a space where you can ask questions, compare notes, share ideas, and learn from others who understand these unique needs.
The result of joining?
Your student feels seen, supported, and able to flourish, and you feel grounded, prepared, and connected.
“I’m not sure where to seat them.”
“How do I support their wellbeing — and my own?”
“I don’t know what they can actually see.”
“The TVI is great, but only here an hour a week.”
“I´m a TVI and I only see this child once a week”
“I feel like I’m missing something important.”
“I wish I had someone to ask.”
…then you’re exactly who this community is for.
Many of you tell me the same thing:
You feel confused about what your student can actually see, overwhelmed by making constant adaptations, and unsure how to support your student’s emotional and social needs too.
You are doing your best, but you are exhausted, carrying the stress of:
adapting on the spot
worrying if you're overlooked something
managing 20+ competing needs
wanting to help but not having the training
trying to regulate your own emotions in a nonstop day
Meanwhile, your student is navigating:
social awkwardness
feeling “different”
visual fatigue
anxiety
frustration they can’t always express
being stared at or singled out
not wanting to “make a fuss”
You will feel:
confident in visibility + emotional support
supported, not alone
calm, because you know what matters
prepared instead of reactive
part of a community that “gets it”
guided by an expert with lived experience
equipped with tools you can use tomorrow
And students will feel:
seen
included
understood
more at ease
less anxious
better able to participate and learn
Small, consistent changes in both accessibility and wellbeing can transform a child’s entire school experience, and yours.
When we talk about inclusion for students with albinism, we usually talk about practical things — seating, glare, devices, worksheets.
And yes, those things all matter.
But visibility is only half the story.
Wellbeing is the other half.
Students with albinism aren’t just navigating a visual difference, they’re navigating:
being watched
looking different
social pressure
mistakes they can’t help
fatigue
frustration
wanting to fit in without drawing attention
emotional loads that others don’t see
And teachers are navigating
constant adapting
decision fatigue
guilt
worry
sensory overload
emotional exhaustion
feeling like you´re never doing “enough”
A child’s wellbeing and a teacher’s wellbeing are connected.
When you feel calmer and more supported, your student feels safer and more understood.
When your student feels secure, learning becomes easier, smoother, and more joyful.
That’s why The Teacher’s Compass blends practical visibility support with emotional wellbeing tools for both you and your student, not as extras, but as essential parts of inclusion.

Hi, I’m Laura Brodie.
You’re already doing something important:
You care deeply about getting this right for your student.
I know how much that matters because I’ve lived this from both sides.
I’ve spent 25 years in classrooms, and I also grew up as the child with albinism sitting in one of those desks.
I know the vision issues, the fatigue, the social pressure, and I know how much difference small, thoughtful classroom choices can make.
I also know what it feels like to be the teacher who was never trained for what they’re facing.
In my first year of teaching, I asked for guidance with a student whose needs felt overwhelming. The response I got was:
“I’m sorry about the year you’re going to have.”
No training.
No support.
Just guesswork.
That moment impacted me because teachers deserve better than being left to figure things out alone.
Luckily, I found mindfulness and it gave me steadiness and clarity, not so I could “have the answers,” but so I could stay present, grounded, and responsive in real classrooms.
The Teacher’s Compass exists to pass that clarity on to you, so you can support your student with confidence, care for your own wellbeing, and trust your professional judgement.
You are the one doing the work.
I’m here to help you do it with less stress, less guessing, and more confidence.
I love that this resource is created by an adult with albinism, and as someone with low vision, I can imagine what a difference this approach could have made for me as a child.
From my own life experience, I often counsel students that while they are not obligated to answer questions, answering genuine questions (not hateful ones) can help a lot with peer relationships. I often didn’t answer questions as a child, so the different options would have been great for me. The overall mindset of self-acceptance and self-confidence would have meant so much. I love the lesson format, which makes it easy for busy teachers to make deeply meaningful lessons with little prep time. I’m thrilled to implement this with my students!
Laura Jones- TEACHER
Growing up with albinism came with its own set of challenges. Navigating life with sensory sensitivities and standing out from others was often difficult as a child. I frequently felt alone and uncertain about how to cope emotionally. Unfortunately, there were very few resources available that supported my emotional well-being as a child with albinism.
That’s why I am very glad to have discovered Laura's focus and work. Her resources, grounded in positive psychology and mindfulness practices, are both powerful and impactful.
They promote self-acceptance, resilience, and overall well-being. These tools are helpful for children and adults alike.
I’m especially excited about these tools reaching young children with albinism, as they will help nurture their emotional health and confidence from an early age. I truly wish I had had access to resources like these growing up, but I’m deeply grateful to have found them today.
Jennifer Shryock- Person With Albinism
Laura´s mindfulness session offered a meaningful introduction to the world of presence and inner calm. Her clear explanations, practical activities, and warm delivery helped us experience firsthand the benefits of slowing down and paying attention. Laura is an engaging and enjoyable speaker, and her ability to connect with the group made the session both inspiring and accessible. Students and teachers alike left feeling relaxed, energized, and confident about integrating mindfulness into their everyday lives. Arancha

I would like to share how I appreciate the work that Laura is doing to raise awareness and to promote empowerment for teachers to be able to support students with albinism in a more holistic and compassionate way.
From my own experience of living with albinism, one thing that I have realised is how we always focus more on the outer world than the inner world of the child.
Albinism isn’t just a physical impairment. It can become an emotional and psychological impairment, too. It is a life long struggle to find our place in the world. Gaining the right support from a young age will empower children to become secure, healthy adults

Yes, and that’s exactly why this community exists.
You may see only one child with albinism in your classroom, and the care you show can become the support that child remembers for life.
What's more, you will be able to use a lot of what we cover for other students in your class with additional needs
Supporting even one child well transforms their confidence, access, and school experience and makes your job easier. You will be supporting all of your students better after joining
